‘Last Jedi’ Director Rian Johnson Was Inspired by These ‘Clone Wars’ Episodes

Rian Johnson has revealed that he was inspired by the TV show “The Clone Wars” when he was writing The Last Jedi.

In a recent Twitter exchange, a fan asked him if the “Mortis” episodes from the show influenced his work on The Last Jedi.

The “Mortis” story arc, in the third season of “The Clone Wars” and added background to the Force mythology. Fans likely remember it for the return of Liam Neeson as the voice of Qui Gon Jinn’s “force ghost.”

As the Star Wars universe expands, it seems the Force must expand as well, and both “The Clone Wars”and “Rebels” added new aspects to its mysterious ways. Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi did that as well, although fans seemed dismayed by the Force projections and “Force Skype” between Rey and Kylo Ren.

Now, it seems, this expansion of the Force can be tied directly to a pivotal story arc in “The Clone Wars.”

The Twitter user asked “I wanted to know your thoughts on the ‘Mortis’ arc from Star Wars the Clone Wars and it connection to any of the films maybe?”

Here is the text.

Johnson responded that indeed he had seen those episodes, as he was writing the film. He seemed to indicate that the episodes may have played a role, most likely in his approach to the Force. “I rewatched these eps (on @dave_filoni’s advice) early in the writing process, they’re so gorgeous and boundary pushing,” he said.

With the negative response The Last Jedi received from so many fans, it will be interesting to see if this revelation by Johnson will change the minds of those disappointed fans. “The Clone Wars” is still a much-beloved part of the new Disney canon.
