David Ayer Reveals the Original Villain and Plot for ‘Suicide Squad’

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has confirmed some surprising characters and elements that were cut out of the final script for the film, providing a glimpse at what could have been for the much-maligned movie.

Despite some solid performances  – particularly Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn – many consider Suicide Squad a loud, obnoxious pile of cinematic garbage. An uninteresting plot and incoherent tone sunk what could have been an interesting film. Most of that can be blamed on Warner Brothers, who ordered massive reshoots and script changes. In addition, writer/director David Ayer apparently forgot the basic tenets of film-making while shooting the movie.

However, Ayer has revealed on Twitter that there was an attempt at a much different story, one that had more of an authentic DC comic book feel. It included “New Gods” villain Steppenwolf. Mother Boxes, and Parademons, elements that would be discarded and used in the Justice League film.

The plot involved Steppenwolf mounting an invasion of Earth using a “boom tube.” For those unfamiliar with the concept, “boom tubes” were introduced into DC Comics by Jack Kirby, and are inter-dimensional bridges (like wormholes) that are opened by “mother boxes” and allow for instantaneous interstellar travel.

The Tweets

First came the speculation by a Twitter user.

A Twitter user posted a question in response, asking if the rumor was true. At first, Ayer “liked” the question, all but confirming the rumor.

Ayer then went further, tweeting that Steppenwolf was the original villain. “Enchantress was under the control of a mother box and Steppenwolfe (sp) was prepping an invasion with a boom tube,” Ayer said. “Had to lose that then the JL story arcs evolved.”

He then revealed the monsters in Suicide Squad were originally Parademons.

The film was originally supposed to end with a big battle against Steppenwolf.

Ayer did not elaborate as to why the changes were made. It is also not clear if the changes were made to Suicide Squad so Justice League could feature them instead.
