Netflix’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Listing Has Thanos Fans Snapping Mad

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War premiered on Netflix on Christmas Day, and the streaming service came under immediate fire from a small, vocal group of Marvel fans.

The outrage came after Netflix posted a description of Avengers: Infinity War that read “Superheroes amass to stop intergalactic sociopath Thanos from acquiring a full set of Infinity Stones and wiping out half of all life in the universe.”

The use of the term “sociopath” did not sit well with some fans, and they took to social media to voice their displeasure.

There’s a debate among Marvel fans over whether Thanos is actually a villain, despite his genocidal actions in Infinity War. Even co-director Anthony Russo has defended Thanos – according to a ComicBook.com story. “Look, if you look at Thanos throughout the movie, what’s noble about the character is it’s not about ego for him,” he said. “He believes that creatures and beings are suffering because of this. So he believes the road for the right way to peace and balance is through eradicating half of all life.”

The pro-Thanos argument has even inspired “Thanos Did Nothing Wrong” hashtag and memes, justifying his use of the “snap.”

The backlash against the use of the word “sociopath” seems to be coming from a small minority – we found very few people online who were actually mad about it. Most people were upset that Netflix had server issues and didn’t have the movie available when they promised. Still, Netflix apparently took the few complaints very seriously, as it changed the description.

Here’s the new description for Infinity War: “Invader. Annihilator. So-called savior. As Thanos moves ever closer to omnipotence, the fate of the universe rests with the Avengers.” Here’s a screenshot of the new description.

Netflix has not released a statement addressing the change or any supposed backlash.
