Game of Thrones ending with Season 8

HBO made it official today: Game of Thrones will end its run after season eight. The Emmy-winning show just finished season six, and showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff had already said they were leaning towards producing just two more seasons, each with fewer episodes with the usual ten.

It was previously announced that season seven will not only be a shorter season, but will also premiere in the summer of 2017 instead of the spring, as winter weather is delaying production.

At the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour this weekend, HBO Programming President Casey Bloys discussed the plans Weiss and Benioff have to end Thrones. “Yes, I think [the showrunners, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] have a
very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. If I
could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons but we want to take
their lead with what they could do and what the best version of the show
is.”
