‘Doctor Who’ Star Matt Smith is Joining the Cast of ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’
The actor who once admitted to not seeing all the Star Wars films is now joining the space opera franchise.
Matt Smith, who starred as the Eleventh Incarnation of The Doctor from 2010 to 2013, is currently in talks to join the cast of Episode IX, currently filming in Great Britain. He is expected to sign on officially soon. Variety first broke the story.
The 35-year-old British actor has also earned an Emmy nomination for Netflix’s “The Crown.” He also appeared in 2015’s Terminator: Genisys.
Smith will join a cast that has already added Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell and Dominic Monaghan.
Returning from the original trilogy are Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and the late Carrie Fisher, who will be seen in unused footage from 2015’s The Force Awakens.
Cast members returning from the “sequel trilogy” films include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd.
The film will be directed by J.J. Abrams, and is set to open Dec. 20, 2019.
