‘Punisher,’ ‘Jessica Jones’ Cancelled by Netflix; Jon Bernthal Reacts

The ax has fallen on the remaining Marvel shows on Netflix, as the streaming service has cancelled both “The Punisher” and “Jessica Jones.”

The cancellation announcement came this morning, and ends the “Defenders” universe Netflix had built over the past four years. In recent months, Netflix had previously cancelled “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist.”

“The Punisher” premiered its second season just a month ago. The cancellation of “Jessica Jones” comes before the series’ third season has even premiered. It will still debut sometime this year.

Netflix issued a statement, published on Deadline.

“Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Netflix confirmed today to Deadline. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come,” the streamer added.

“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” Netflix also made official this President’s Day. “We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others”.

“We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

Marvel Television issued a lengthy statement celebrating the massive undertaking of bringing the various series to Netflix. “On behalf of everyone at Marvel Television, we couldn’t be more proud or more grateful to our audience,” it read. “Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.”

Before the cancellation announcement was made, Jon Bernthal posted a cryptic message on Instagram on Monday morning. His words led many to speculate the end had come for the show.

“To all who have served. All who know loss. All who love and understand Frank and his pain. It has been an honor to walk in his boots,” he said.

While the Marvel live-action shows may be dead on Netflix, speculation remains that some or all may be revived. The shows may return on the new Disney+ streaming service, which premieres later this year.
