You’re Getting a ‘Grease’ Prequel, Like It Or Not
Paramount is continuing that long-standing Hollywood tradition of ruining perfectly good classics.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is developing a prequel to the 1978 hit musical Grease.
The Grease prequel, titled Summer Loving, will cover the legendary summer meeting between Danny Zuko (played by John Travolta in the original film) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John). The meeting was celebrated in the film’s opening song, which will serve as the prequel title.
Summer Loving will be written by John August, who penned Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He also wrote the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin.
It is not clear who will play the car-loving greaser Danny or the Australian good girl Sandy. A production start and release date is currently unknown.
A Grease sequel, released in 1982 and starring Michelle Pfeiffer, flopped with audiences. In 2016, a live staging of the Grease musical was a ratings winner for Fox.
