Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series Casts Its First Role
According to a report by Variety, Amazon has cast its first role for its “Lord of the Rings” series, but the news only brings more questions.
Australian actress Markella Kavenagh has reportedly been cast as a character named Tyra in the upcoming series. She is the first actor to be cast, although other names have been circulated.
Kavenagh has starred in mostly Australian projects, including the series “Romper Stomper” and the BBC’s The Cry. She recently starred in Amazon’s original series “Picnic at Hanging Rock.”
Amazon paid a reported $250 million for the rights to the “Lord of the Rings” series. It is being developed by the writing team of JD Payne and Patrick McKay. “Game of Thrones” alum Bryan Cogman is a consultant on the series, and J.A. Bayona (Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom) will direct multiple episodes.
The series is set in the “Second Age” of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Rings” works, which covers the creation of the Ring of Power and the subsequent war. There have been some references made by Amazon Studios as to Middle Earth locations that the series may be set in, but nothing definite.
The character Tyra is not mentioned in the “Lord of the Rings” books or any of the other supporting materials. It remains unclear who Kavenagh will be playing or even what sort of race she will be: man, elf, or something else.
