New ‘Mandalorian’ Trailer Features Ming-Na Wen’s Character (VIDEO)
With the premiere of “The Mandalorian” looming on November 12, we’re getting our first look at a mysterious assassin that will be featured in the live-action Star Wars series.
The assassin, Fennec Shand, is played by “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and Mulan actor Ming-Na Wen. You’ll have to wait to see her however: according to a new interview in Vanity Fair, Wen says her character will not appear until midway through the first season, which will be shown on the new Disney+ streaming service.
The new trailer appears to show that Wen’s Shand will be perhaps an ally (or a friendly rival) to Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian bounty hunter, who still doesn’t have a name.
Wen, however, has no problem discussing her character, and how the name influenced her portrayal. “We got our inspiration really from the name,” she says in the Vanity Fair interview. “The idea of a fennec fox came to mind. She’s tricky, and yet she’s able to maneuver and survive, and be stealthy—so very graceful and agile. I just love that whole image with the name.”
The new trailer also features more of Nick Nolte’s character, an Ugnaught named Kuiil. We even get to hear his voice.
Wen’s first appearance is in an episode directed by Dave Filoni, the guru behind the animated series The Clone Wars, Rebels, and Resistance. The two both grew up in Pittsburgh, and immediately bonded. “We both grew up in the same town, and there was just a real connection because of our love of Star Wars,” she said. “He was so open to talking about things, and working out the logic of each scene. That’s what I love. We were working on some line changes, and he was up for all of that. So it was a very fluid, fun, organic kind of process.”
Here’s how Vanity Fair summarizes the plot to the series.
Pascal accepts a bounty from a mysterious client (played by Werner Herzog) who wears an Empire insignia around his neck, then goes on to encounter a former Rebel Shock Trooper Cara Dune (Gina Carano), a jowly Ugnaught alien named Kuiil (voiced by Nick Nolte), and a killer droid IG-11 (voiced by Taika Waititi), among other underworld denizens.

We also get more callbacks to past Star Wars movies, as we see both a Reek (the Episode II creature had already been shown) and a Dewback (which first appeared in the original film).
