Comedian Ricky Gervais has a reputation for speaking his mind and saying offensive things. As host of the Golden Globes Sunday evening, he was true to form. However, his venom was directed at the hypocrites being honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
In a scathing monologue to open the show, Gervais noted this was his fifth and final time hosting the event, as his jokes were likely to get him fired.
He then mocked celebrities’ “woke” culture, and warned them not to make their speeches political. “So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to give a political speech, you’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”
Mocking their moral hypocrisy, he noted “If ISIS started a streaming service, you would be calling your agents.” He even referred to the members of the audience as “perverts.”
At one point, he even slipped in a “Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself” joke. When the audience groaned their disapproval, he shot back. “I know he was your friend, but I don’t care,” he said. “Had to make your own way on your own plane, didn’t you?”
Even as the final award for the night was being announced, Gervais took another swing at the expense of Sandra Bullock, who he noted appeared in The Birdbox. “(It’s) a movie about people who had to pretend like they didn’t see anything. Kinda like working for Harvey Weinstein.” He then pointed to the audience and exclaimed “You did it!”
His barbs had the audience looking uncomfortable and at times, afraid to laugh, in case a camera caught them. Tom Hanks’ reaction to the monologue has already gone viral.
His last line of the night had to be censored by NBC, as he told the audience to “F— off.”
