‘Woke’ Harley Quinn is a Bernie Voter in ‘Birds of Prey’ Movie

It’s a match made in Hollywood’s political heaven: anarchist Harley Quinn and socialist Bernie Sanders.

The DC Comics superhero movie Birds of Prey hit theaters this weekend, and it flopped in grand fashion, becoming the biggest failure for a DC Comics movie since 2010’s Jonah Hex. Remember that cinematic travesty?

Since you, along with most other moviegoers, likely didn’t see Birds of Prey, you probably didn’t hear about the political slant the movie took, if just for a moment.

About halfway through the film, Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie) breaks the “fourth wall” and addresses the audience. It’s something she does throughout the film, including when she is confronted by the film’s villain, Roman Sionis (played by Ewan McGregor).

When she begins to talk to the audience, Harley begins to list why the villain hates her. Among her reasons (of which there are many), is one unusual one: she admits she “voted for Bernie.”

It’s an odd placement. Whether Harley’s admission is an endorsement for Bernie – or a slight – is up to the viewer. With Hollywood’s hyper-political activism, however, yet anther inclusion of a political reference of this kind will likely turn more viewers off.

The film’s heavily-promoted “woke feminism” appeared to turn off potential male viewers, who stayed away in droves.

‘Just a joke,’ director claims

The film’s director, Cathy Yan, claims there was no political agenda behind the joke. She says it came about as she and Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson were brainstorming.

“I think the Bernie thing, I’ll give full credit to Christina on that one,” she said. “And we all just chuckled at it so we thought, why not? And I think tonally and stylistically this is a movie that can afford that kind of stuff, and a little bit of self-awareness — or a lot of self-awareness, I should say. And not a lot of movies get to make a Bernie joke, so sure, let’s do it.”
