Disney Set to Ruin ‘Robin Hood’ with a Live-Action Remake
Disney is developing a live-action remake of its animated classic Robin Hood.
First released in 1973, Robin Hood has never achieved the level of critical fame or reverence of other classic Disney animated films. In recent years, however, a generation raised on VHS releases and TV viewings has created a wide fan base and new appreciation of the film as a true classic.
Perhaps that is why Disney intends to milk its popularity with a remake, which will reportedly air on the Disney+ service, according to Variety.
The film will be in the style of their recent reboots of Dumbo and The Jungle Book, offering a mix of CGI animals and live action.
Disney’s recent streak of live-action remakes of its animated classics have gotten mixed reviews from critics and fans. Many dismiss them as mere money grabs, devoid of any originality.
Here is more on the creative team who signed on for the Robin Hood movie, via Variety.
“Blindspotting” director Carlos Lopez Estrada is on board to helm the movie. Kari Granlund, who wrote the script for 2019’s Disney Plus reboot of “Lady and the Tramp,” is attached to pen the new “Robin Hood.” Justin Springer, whose Disney credits include “Dumbo” and “Tron: Legacy,” is producing the pic.
The deals for Estrada and Granlund were signed early last month prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
Directed by one of Disney’s “Nine Old Men,” Wolfgang Reitherman, Robin Hood featured the music and narration of Roger Miller and a bunch of animals as the main characters. Robin Hood was a fox, Little John was a bear, Friar Tuck was a badger, Maid Marian as a vixen and the Sheriff of Nottingham as a wolf.
There is no word on whether the new version will stick with those animal roles.
