Taika Waititi to Direct New ‘Star Wars’ Film
Taika Waititi is directing a new Star Wars movie, Lucasfilm has announced.
The not-yet-titled film will be written by Waititi and 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
The announcement comes after Waititi directed the season finale of the hit Star Wars live-action series “The Mandalorian,” which premiered on the Disney+ streaming service last year.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker, who has also directed Thor Ragnarok, has been rumored to be developing a Star Wars film for months.
First, however, he will direct Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which is scheduled to open in theaters on February 18, 2022.
It is not clear when Waititi’s film will go into production or premiere. Disney had previously announced three Star Wars movies would open in December of 2022, 2024 and 2026. Those films were supposed to be written and directed by “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. They, however, left the project last October.
Taika Waititi won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay in February for Jojo Rabbit.
