Superman Cape Worn by Christopher Reeve Sold at Auction for Big Bucks
The cape worn by actor Christopher Reeve in Superman I and II was one of the highlights of the Julien’s Auctions held this weekend in Beverly Hills.
The auction featured 900 items from Hollywood classics, as well as some astronaut memorabilia.
The Superman cape, which included a wire and other equipment used in the Zoptic-filming process used in the movies, sold for $110,000.
Christopher Reeve wore the capes in scenes for the first two Superman movies, which were filmed mostly at the same time.
The final bid isn’t even the highest price paid for a Reeve Superman cape. Last December, another Reeve cape sold at a Julien’s auction for $193,750.
That cape’s sale may have been the reason the latest cape sold for far less. The December cape was a hero cape in excellent condition, while the latest auction featured a cape with some damage, as it had holes for the wires used during filming.
Also sold at the auction was suit believed to have been worn by Keir Dullea in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Dullea played Dr. David Bowman, and the suit and helmet sold for $370,000.
An original tobacco pipe used by Sir Ian Holm (Bilbo Baggins) in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring sold at the same auction for $28,200.
A 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am used in appearances for the television series “Knight Rider television series (and signed by David Hasselhoff) sold for $192,000.
Neil Armstrong’s pilot control stick from the Apollo 11 capsule sold for an incredible $370,000, while Buzz Aldrin’s stick from the same capsule sold for $256,000.
