Thor Posted Tony Stark’s Cell Phone Number on Twitter, and It Actually Works
Grab your phone and give Tony Stark, (aka Iron Man) a ring. No, seriously, you can do that, and you have Thor to thank for it.
Thursday evening, the official Thor Twitter account posted the following tweet, featuring only a phone number. By calling it, you’ll learn the number belongs to Tony Stark.
The tweet was a continuation of a prank that played out in the Thor comic book from Marvel. Yes, we realize our featured image for this story shows Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth, the non-comic, cinematic versions of the characters. We were just looking for any excuse to use their pictures. Anyway, here’s the backstory to the tweet.
In the first issue of Thor released earlier this year, Thor sends his mythical hammer Mjolnir hurtling through space from his kingdom of Asgard to Earth, where it destroys a monster the Avengers are fighting.
Before the hammer goes back to Thor, Tony Stark grabs a Sharpie and writes a message to him on it. It’s a funny moment, and sets up a bigger payoff later on.
In Thor #7, new in comic book shops this week, Thor writes Stark’s personal cell phone number on Mjolnir and sends it to Earth. The hammer lands in Oklahoma, where people find it and begin circulating Stark’s cell phone number.
As many fans who read the comic and saw the tweet discovered, Tony Stark’s phone number (212-970-4133) is an actual working number. Calling the number will get you to Tony Stark’s voicemail, and while it isn’t Robert Downey Jr. who leaves the greeting, it does sound a bit like him, and it features his trademark sarcasm.
“Hi. Yes, this is Iron Man,” the voicemail says. “However, due to some big blonde jerk, I no longer use this number, but hey, nice try anyway. For all things Tony Stark please visit www.TonyStarkIronMan.com and try and stay safe out there, yeah? I’m busy enough as it is.”
By the way, the website just directs you to the Marvel Comics website, to a page promoting the comic.
Some even tweeted video of themselves making the call.
The official Iron Man/Tony Stark Twitter account responded with this tweet:
The number is still working as of press time.
