Peacock Streaming Service is Finally Available on Roku

After months of negotiation, NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock is finally available to Roku customers.

The Peacock streaming service went live on July 15, and while it was available on a number of devices and laptops, an app for the service was not available on Roku. That was because Roku wanted a particular cut of advertising and subscription revenue that Peacock earned on their platform. Peacock wanted a smaller cut for Roku, and the months-long standoff ensued.

Roku is the largest streaming platform in America, with over 43 million accounts. Peacock claims to have 10 million subscribers, but had been severely hurt by not being available on the Roku platform, which is installed on millions of TVs and devices that connect TVs to online streaming.

Roku is in a similar standoff with HBOMax, who refuses to pay what it claims are unreasonable demands from the platform. The two sides seem to be at an impasse with no resolution in sight.

In recent days, NBCUniversal had threatened to pull their other NBC streaming apps from the service over the impasse. It is unclear if that caused a deal to finally be made, or who ended up having their demands met.

Late Friday, Roku announced a deal had been made.

On Monday, Peacock announced that their app was now available to download on the Roku platform.

Peacock offers a number of current and classic NBC shows, including “Brooklyn Nine Nine” and “Battlestar Galactica.” It also offers films from Universal’s vault, including E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Alfred Hitchock films like Psycho. Other shows like “Downton Abbey” are featured, as are original films like Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

You can sign up for a free Peacock account at PeacockTV.com. A Peacock Premium subscription is also available for $4.99 a month, wich offers more movies, TV shows, and original programming.
