Cloverfield is Finally Getting a Direct Sequel

Cloverfield, the 2008 found-footage monster movie produced by J. J. Abrams and directed by Matt Reeves (The Batman), is getting a direct sequel.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news in an exclusive report on Friday.

Abrams’ Bad Robot will produce, and Paramount Pictures will distribute the film, which will not continue the found-footage format. Reeves will not return to direct.

Joe Barton, the showrunner for HBO Max’s upcoming The Batman spinoff series, will write the script.

Cloverfield has spawned two spinoff sequels, but neither was a direct sequel. 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane, starring John Goodman, seemed to take place during the first film’s timeframe, but involved an alien attack rather than an undersea monster. The Cloverfield Paradox, a 2018 Netflix release, was originally a film called The God Particle that had scenes added to tie it into the franchise’s universe.

The new film, it is reported, will deal directly with the events in the first film.
