Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ Drops a New Trailer
Marvel Studios has finally given us a trailer for Eternals, their ambitious attempt to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe like never before.
Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t give us much insight into the plot or the characters, only some bleak visuals in exotic locations, and brief looks at the ensemble cast.
Nomadland director Chloé Zhao has certainly brought her signature visual style to the film, but it’s not even clear who these characters are. Hard-core fans of the Marvel Comics may know, but there is no attempt to introduce the characters or their motives, except that one wants to lead the now-leaderless Avengers.
The trailer features a voiceover by Salma Hayek’s Ajak, who says of the humans on Earth “We have watched and guided….Throughout the years, we have never interfered – until now.”
That statement alone will likely raise questions among viewers. It’s clear that the film takes place after the events of Endgame, and yet the Eternals felt no need to help Earth (or the rest of the universe) from the threat of Thanos. Let’s hope the film explains why it’s so important they help now, and not then.
The film also stars Angelina Jolie as Thena, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari and Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos.
We do know that the plot involves a battle against The Deviants, but as you’ll see, the trailer gives us little more information about what is going on.
Here’s the trailer.
Eternals opens in theaters on November 5, 2021.
