‘Sound of Freedom’ Tops ‘Indiana Jones,’ ‘Mission Impossible’ at Box Office
In a summer filled with box office disappointments and outright flops, the indie film Sound of Freedom has been one of the few bright spots for theater owners. The true-life drama starring Jim Caviezel defied industry projections and out-earned big-studio releases, including both Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
The film starring Jim Caviezel actually overtook the Disney film on Sunday, August 13, when it accumulated $172.8 million in ticket sales. Sound of Freedom now sits at over $183 million in ticket sales domestically and $212 million worldwide since its July 4 opening. Indiana Jones finished its theatrical run at just over $174 million, and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One finished at $172 million.
Sound of Freedom tells the true story of former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard (played by Caviezel), who heads to Columbia to save a young girl from human traffickers. Ballard would go on to found Operation Underground Railroad, which battles human trafficking worldwide.
The film has endured some controversy, as some agenda-driven social media users have taken issue with Caviezel’s personal beliefs, and attacked the film in response. Others have inexplicably attacked the film to argue that its claims of widespread child trafficking are exaggerated, even as news reports prove otherwise.
The films is currently expanding into foreign film markets throughout the fall, and a home video release has not yet been announced.
