Mego’s DC Super Heroes Release Next Month, But Only At A Regional Retail Chain

Mego’s long awaited 8-inch DC Super Heroes line is finally hitting stores in September, but they won’t be readily available for most fans.

That’s because the line of Batman, Superman, and the rest of the Justice League will only be sold at Meijer, a regional retail chain in the Midwest.

According to an announcement by Mego, Warner Bros. is limiting the initial release of the retro-style action figures to Meijer, which has only 253 stores located in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.

For Mego and DC collectors, that likely means it will be difficult to get some of the figures. Meijer does sell online, but Mego cannot confirm whether they would make the DC line available online for those outside of the area.

Retailers who have offered Mego figures recently have seen inconsistent availability, particularly Target, who sold them exclusively for a time. It has led to frustration among collectors, and many of them are voicing concerns online over Warner’s decision to limit the availability of the DC line.

While Mego did not provide additional details, they did say Meijer will be the “first retailer” to offer the line, so availability will likely not be an issue, eventually.

Mego Museum, the leading website covering the history and current news on the Mego line, was given an exclusive first-look at one of the first Batman figures to come off the line.

Mego later announced that the DC line, called “World’s Greatest Mego Heroes,” would feature the standard “rubber band” bodies the company has used on its figures since the 1970s. Mego had previously announced that the line would sport new “bandless” bodies, but the pandemic made it impossible for Mego staff to travel overseas to see the new body prototypes and approve them.

At Toy Fair earlier this year, Mego showed off the DC line with prototypes of Superman, Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. They are expected to all be in this initial wave of figures.
