Olivia Wilde To Direct a Marvel Female Superhero Film
Actress/director Olivia Wilde has inked a deal to develop and direct a female-centered Marvel film for Sony, and it appears it will be the long-rumored Spider-Woman movie.
Multiple sources report that Wilde’s film features a yet-unnamed female character from the Marvel universe. However, since Sony Pictures only has the rights to characters in the Spider-Man universe, that limits who the female character could be. The only other major female Marvel character is Spider-Gwen, but a movie for her seems unlikely at this point.
Variety reports that Sony is not commenting on the report, but Olivia Wilde herself confirmed the report with a tweet, which featured a spider emoji.
If it indeed is a Spider-Woman film, it would likely center around the character of Jessica Drew, a fixture in Marvel Comics since the 1970s.
Wilde directed last year’s Booksmart, and the writer of that film, Katie Silberman, will write this film as well. Amy Pascal will produce and Rachel O’Connor will executive produce.
