‘The Savage Dragon’ Comic Book Endorses Joe Biden, And Fans Are Mocking It To Death
Stop the presses folks – The Savage Dragon has endorsed Joe Biden for President!
Ok, we’re guessing if you’re not a die-hard comics fan, you’re wondering “Who is the Savage Dragon?” If you are a die-hard comics fan, you’re likely asking “They still make Savage Dragon comics?”
In truth, the endorsement by a second-rate indie comic book superhero isn’t a big deal, but the sheer lack of self-awareness in this cringe-inducing cover was too good to pass up.
For those of you unfamiliar with The Savage Dragon, its creator Erik Larsen, and Image Comics, here’s a quick primer.
Larsen was an artist (most notably on The Amazing Spider-Man) who joined other notable artists including Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, and Jim Valentino in leaving Marvel in 1992 to create a new company, Image Comics. Larsen’s comic book for Image, The Savage Dragon, was a hit in the company’s early days, even getting its own animated series for a short while on the USA Network.
In recent years, however, the popularity of the comic has dwindled, and sales plummeted. It wasn’t helped by some controversial content, including a 2004 cover in which The Dragon punched then-President George W. Bush as it endorsed his election opponent, John Kerry.
Larsen even featured Barack Obama on the cover of one issue, endorsing him for re-election.
Recently, Larsen earned a fair amount of criticism for the heavy sexual content he featured in the comic and on the cover. He even produced an issue in which a character watches a video of a child being sexually assaulted. The content is too graphic for our site, but Bleeding Fool has posted censored versions of the art in this article (click here) and this article (click here).
Despite the horrific subject matter and the political pandering, Larsen remains a fixture at Image Comics, currently serving as CFO. Despite poor sales, The Savage Dragon is still cranking out issues, and Larsen is free to make political endorsements that no one really seems to care about.
Image Comics is the publisher of more popular comic titles like The Walking Dead and Spawn.
Strangely, Laesen’s Biden cover (which will hit comic book stores this October ) is a badly-drawn representation of the Democratic presidential ticket, with both Biden and Harris looking absolutely frumpy and disheveled.
Fans (and non-fans) didn’t seem too enthused by the cover, and took to Twitter to trash it.
