Smash the Patriarchy? Marvel Comics Slams Iron Man as Just ‘Another White Guy’
In case you haven’t noticed, Marvel Comics has embraced a progressive social and political agenda that has turned off many readers.
As part of that social justice movement, Marvel is attacking what it sees as a problematic legacy of white men as its heroes. That includes Iron Man himself, Tony Stark.
Most people have never had an issue with Marvel having so many white men as heroes, but in today’s easily-triggered culture, toxic masculinity is now everywhere, apparently.
So, Marvel Comics has jumped aboard the social justice train, and forsaken the white males who make up its core reader base. This push against the “patriarchy,” and for diversity, hasn’t made comics any better, or more original. It does, however, mean you get more bitter, snippy, condescending characters going after white male superheroes.
Which brings us to Iron Man #2, released just last week. A particular page in the book is rubbing folks the wrong way, for its treatment of Tony Stark.
It started with comic book artist Ethan Van Sciver tweeting about the SJW movement in corporation-owned comics. In response, Twitter user @freebearly shared a screenshot from the comic featuring Stark and Hellcat. Tony is battered, bruised, and hospitalized, and Hellcat is mocking what she claims is his toxic white masculinity. “You’re another white guy with a god complex,” she says, ignoring both his many heroic deeds to save humanity and her own meager superhero resume.
Responses to the tweet pointed out that Hellcat’s rant wasn’t empowering or fitting to the characters.
And people wonder why comic book sales are at an all-time low.
