Michael Keaton Will Be The DCEU’s Batman Moving Forward
Michael Keaton’s return to the role of Batman appears to be more than just an extended cameo – he will be THE Batman for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
The DCEU is the series of interconnected DC Comics films featuring the characters and actors from Justice League. Ben Affleck is ending his run as Bruce Wayne/Batman with the upcoming The Flash film, where he will make a final appearance.
Keaton’s appearance in the film appears to be the start of something new, according to DC Film president Walter Hamada. In an interview with Brooks Barnes of The New York Times, Hamada confirmed that there will be two concurrent Batman film franchises. “Warner Bros. will have two different film sagas involving Batman — played by two different actors — running at the same time,” he said.
Barnes later confirmed that via Twitter that the two actors were Robert Pattinson (obviously) and, to the surprise of many, Keaton.
That statement set off speculation as to how Keaton’s Batman will operate. The common consensus is that Keaton will introduce the Batman Beyond storyline. That, in turn, could introduce Terry McGinnis as Batman’s protégé, or even Batgirl, who had been rumored to have her own film in development.
