WATCH: This New Vader Fan Film is Better Than ‘The Last Jedi’ (VIDEO)
YouTube channel Star Wars Theory, with over one million subscribers, has created an incredible fan film set between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. It is most impressive.
At a time when many fans are lamenting movies and comics that they feel diminishes the Star Wars legacy, this fan film, titled “Vader: Episode I: Shards of the Past,” definitely has the right feel. Despite the obvious smaller budget, “Shards of the Past” captures the essence of the Vader character, and it helps that the voice and costume are spot-on.
There are plans to do more “episodes” of the fan-film, although exact shooting and release announcements have not been made.
The team behind Star Wars Theory actually got the OK from Lucasfilm to do the fan film. They had to agree, of course, not to monetize it on YouTube or crowdfund it. That meant spending $150,000 out of their own pockets to create the costumes, special effects, and sets. However, you see every penny on the screen, and then some.
Star Wars Theory explained the rationale behind the fan film on their Patreon page:
This project is 100% not for profit, and will be paid by me. I’ve spent over $150K already of my own hard earned money to bring you the biggest, best, Star Wars Fan-Film Episode ever made. More story. More fighting. More Vader. To truly go into the depths of who Vader/Anakin Skywalker is after his transition to the dark side. We’ve seen Jedi Anakin struggling to stay in the light, and we’ve seen big bad Vader, fully committed to being the bad guy. But what about in between? That transition period from episode 3 to 4? This will (fan-film) complete the story that we’ve all been waiting for.
Here’s the film.
