IDW Publishing has released a third volume of Star Wars comic strips that ran in newspapers in the 1980s.

Star Wars: The Classic Newspaper Comics Volume 3 is out this week, and is available to order from Amazon (click here to get it) and other retailers.

At a time when fans had to wait three years for a new Star Wars film, the comic strips and comic books were the only way for kids to get new adventures of their favorite characters in the interim. The puts the nostalgia factor on high for this book, the final entry in the trilogy of hardcovers reprinting the complete classic comics.

The comic strips were written by former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Archie Goodwin, who took over after the death of Russ Manning. Goodwin also wrote a number of Marvel’s Star Wars comic books, as well as the comic adaptations of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Al Williamson is the artist for this volume, which includes every Star Wars comic strip that ran in papers from July 26, 1982 to March 11, 1984. He worked with Goodwin on the Secret Agent X-9 newspaper strip in the 1960s, before their stints at Marvel, which made their re-teaming for the Star Wars comic strips such a success. He also provided the art for the Empire and Jedi comic adaptations that Goodwin wrote.

The volume includes nine story arcs, including “A New Beginning,” “Revenge of the Jedi,” “Doom Mission,” and “The Final Trap.” The book includes each Sunday page title header and “bonus” panels in their meticulously restored original color.
