A Third ‘Walking Dead’ Series Is Coming to AMC
A third “Walking Dead” TV series is coming to AMC, part of the network’s plan to provide a new “Walking Dead” episode every Sunday from the end of the Super Bowl to Thanksgiving.
“The Walking Dead,” based on the Robert Kirkman comic book about the survivors of a zombie apocalypse, first premiered on AMC in 2010 and became a ratings phenomenon. It just completed its ninth season and will return this fall for season ten.
A spinoff series, “Fear the Walking Dead,” premiered in 2015. Although not as successful ratings-wise, “Fear” has earned its own loyal following, and has recently merged with “The Walking Dead” storyline by having the character of Morgan Jones (Lennie James) join the cast.
The new series, which has yet to be titled, will debut in 2020. The show will be centered on two female leads, according to Sarah Barnett, president of AMC’s entertainment networks. She notes that the fans have connected with young female characters featured on “The Walking Dead,” but the series has seen a decline in viewers as leads have left the show, and newer, younger characters have taken larger roles.
AMC would provide no additional details on the premise, citing their long-standing tradition of secrecy around the shows. The series will begin production this summer in Virginia, and will feature ten episodes in its first season. Scott Gimple and Matt Negrete are the show’s co-creators, with Negrete serving as showrunner.
“This allows us to come to the marketplace with completely uninterrupted ‘Walking Dead’ universe content from post-Super Bowl Sunday to Thanksgiving,” Scott Collins, president of ad sales for AMC Networks, told reporters.
