Like It or Not, We’re Getting a New ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Movie
Disney is currently developing a sixth – YES SIXTH – Pirates of the Caribbean film, and is bringing in the guy behind Chernobyl to breathe new life into the sinking franchise.
Ted Elliott, who co-wrote four of the five previous films, will now be joined by Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO’s Chernobyl, to develop a new Pirates film. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the story on Friday.
Despite being one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time, the Pirates movies have drifted into mediocrity in recent installments. Johnny Depp’s personal issues have helped drive down moviegoer interest in the franchise.
It is not clear if Depp or his character of Jack Sparrow would return for the new film.
Previously, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were working on a script, but they left the project earlier this year.
Although not confirmed, Jerry Bruckheimer is expected to produce the new film.
Mazin’s resume includes writing Scary Movie and The Hangover movies. This year, however, he went on to create the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries, Chernobyl, based on the real-life story of the Russian nuclear disaster.
