Collector’s guide to Hasbro Star Wars 30th Anniversary Collection action figures

2007 marked the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars, and Hasbro decided to do something special with their line of Star Wars toys and action figures. The line ran from late 2006 through mid-2008, and became one of the more popular series of figures ever released. The 30th Annversary Collection featured a unique mix of characters from the original and prequel trilogies, the “expanded universe,” and the mind of Ralph McQuarrie.

Figures in the line were issued on a new style of card, which was diecut and featured artwork of the character, rather than a photo. Figures also included a coin with the character’s likeness, much like Kenner did with “Power of the Force” figures in the 1980’s. Many of the characters had not been made into figures before, and were a big hit with collectors. Many of the figures released in the 30th Anniversary Collection were reissues of previously released figures (under the Saga Legends brand as well as in Battle Packs) which were often repainted. Some figures were hard to find initially, like the Darktrooper.

Hasbro also released a number of characters from the “Expanded Universe” of books, comics, cartoons, and video games. This included the animated Boba Fett from the Star Wars Holiday Special, Darth Malak from the “Knights of the Old Republic” video game, and a tattooed Anakin from “Clone Wars.” The video game “The Force Unleashed” also saw a number of their characters released as figures, including a battle-damaged Darth Vader, Juno Eclipse, and Maris Brood.

The 30th Anniversary Collection also featured a line of figures based on the movie conceptual drawings of artist Ralph McQuarrie. His early designs for the look for many Star Wars characters have become legend, and now they have been made into figures. Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Chewbacca, and even Luke Skywalker were among the figures made, and are the most popular in the line.

Figures in the 30th Anniversary Collection in 2007 were initially numbered, with figures released in 2008 starting the numbering over again. Hasbro later dropped that with the Saga Legends line, which consisted of reissues of popular figures, including the “Fan’s Choice” of the Darktrooper. The initial numbered figures were released in “waves” which hit stores several months apart, with each wave usually representing characters from a particular film (figures #1 through #8 were from Revenge of the Sith, while #9 through #23 were from the original Star Wars, and so on). Hasbro also issued a number of “comic packs” which consisted of a comic book (either from the original Marvel series or the newer Dark Horse titles) and two figures based on characters from the comic.

A number of exclusive items were also released that collectors could find at certain retailers, websites, and events. This included figures exclusive to the San Diego Comic Con and the Star Wars Celebration, as well as online retailers like the Star Wars Shop and Entertainment Earth. The “Order 66” two-packs were available only at Target, the Cantina Band Members Commemorative Tin Set was exclusive to Wal-Mart, and assorted “Battle Packs” of multiple figure sets were available only at Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, and Target. A complete list of exclusive items and where they were available follows.

Included in the 30th Anniversary wave were 12 “Galactic Hunt” figures, which were specially selected figures from the line issued on gold-stamped cardbacks with a gold coin instead of silver. These “chase” figures were randomly inserted in figure cases and were sought after by collectors. A “vintage” line of figures, which were based on the 1980’s figure sculpts and were released in 1980’s style packaging, were also released.

During this time, Hasbro also released another wave of vintage style figures, which were crafted in the style of the original figures from the 70’s and 80’s as well as packed on original style cards.

By the summer of 2008, Hasbro ended the 30th Anniversary Collection, as new figures would then be issued on new “Legacy” cardbacks as well as packaging to coincide with the release of the new “Clone Wars” movie and TV show.
