Here’s Why Will Smith Dropped Out of ‘Suicide Squad 2’

James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel has suffered a major setback, as star Will Smith has reportedly left the film. And now, we likely know why.

Although it isn’t yet official, reports say Smith will not reprise his role of Deadshot in the film. He and actress Margot Robbie, who played Harley Quinn, delivered performances that made the film a box office hit, although critic reviews were less enthusiastic.

According to Variety, Smith dropped out not because of creative differences with Gunn, but because of scheduling conflicts. “Sources say scheduling was the ultimate factor and that the decision was made on amicable terms between both sides with no hard feelings,” the report stated. Smith is currently filming Bad Boys 3 and is due to film Ang Lee’s Gemini Man, but it is unclear if that is the project causing the scheduling conflict.

The loss of Smith comes at a time when co-star Margot Robbie’s participation in the film is up in the air. Although no one is confirmed for the sequel yet, reports said Robbie would not return, opting to star in the Harley Quinn spinoff Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). However, other reports say she will indeed return for the sequel.

Will Smith has not yet commented on the reports.

Suicide Squad 2 is set for an August 6, 2021 release.
