James Gunn Reinstated as Director of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’
Marvel Studios has reinstated James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, months after firing him over a series of offensive tweets.
According to an exclusive report by Deadline, the decision was actually made months ago, but only confirmed today. The firing came after tweets made by Gunn a decade ago made fun of rape and pedophilia.
Gunn apologized for the tweets, saying at the time they were made with the intent to shock and amuse, but realized they were no longer appropriate in the new social age of #MeToo.
At the time, members of the Guardians cast stood by Gunn, but both Marvel and parent company Disney stood firm in its decision.
However, according to Deadline, Marvel and Disney began rethinking its decision soon afterward.
Why the change of heart? After the firing, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn met with Gunn on multiple occasions to discuss the situation. Persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation after, Horn decided to reverse course and reinstate Gunn.
Gunn will direct Guardians 3 after he completes work on Suicide Squad 2 for DC and Warner Brothers.
