Disney Announces Release Dates for New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy – ‘Gambit’ Movie Dead

Disney has announced a shakeup on their upcoming release dates, after their merger with 20th Century Fox brought a number of new films and intellectual properties into their fold.

This new schedule includes delays for a Marvel mutant film and an Avatar sequel, but it did include dates for three new Star Wars films.

Another Marvel mutant, however, did survive the shakeup. Gambit, which had been languishing in development hell at Fox, is not on Disney’s release schedule for the foreseeable future.

That’s not surprising, given the turmoil the film has seen in trying to keep actors, directors, and writers on board, and most considered it dead even before the merger. But it is surprising that Marvel Studios has no immediate plans for the popular character.

Perhaps the biggest news, however, are release dates for three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars films beginning in 2022. The dates are December 16, 2022; December 20, 2024; and December 18, 2026.

Although not confirmed, it is believed the films are a new trilogy. Disney previously announced that two separate Star Wars trilogies, not related to the Skywalker saga, were in development. The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is developing one, and Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are heading the other. It is unclear whose trilogy will move ahead first.

Disney also announced a delay on Avatar 2, from December 18, 2020 to December 17, 2021. Three more sequels will follow every other year through 2027.

Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story moves to December 18, 2020, and Disney’s Cruella opens Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Disney announced two Marvel movie dates, on May 1 and Nov. 6. Titles were not announced, but it is likely one of three films in development: Black Widow, Shang Chi or The Eternals.

The New Mutants, Fox’s long-delayed Marvel mutant spinoff, gets delayed again, from August 2, 2019 to April 3, 2020. Reshoots have held the film back.
