Eric McCormack Wants to Blacklist Actors Who Support Trump
“Will and Grace” actor Eric McCormack is proposing a “blacklist” of actors and entertainment industry professionals who support President Donald Trump.
The Canadian-born McCormack floated the idea in a tweet to The Hollywood Reporter, which had published a report about President Trump holding a fundraiser in Beverly Hills.
“Hey, @THR,” McCormack tweeted. “Kindly report on everyone attending this event, so the rest of us can be clear about who we don’t wanna work with. Thx.”
This blatant attempt at blacklisting may remind some of McCarthy-era tactics, when some actors were shut out of jobs and marginalized by the Hollywood establishment for their political views.
Even today, actors who voice conservative views or support for President Trump endure harassment on social media. Some have said they have lost acting jobs because of their political views.
The blacklisting movement has taken on a more insidious element, including threats of violence. Earlier this year, a play about anti-Trump FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page was cancelled after death threats against its stars Dean Cain and Kristy Swanson. Both Cain and Swanson are outspoken conservatives and supporters of the President.
Still, this targeting of conservative actors didn’t stop McCormack from supporting the idea.
Not to be outdone, his “Will and Grace” co-star Debra Messing joined in. She claimed the “public has a right to know” who private citizens support politically.
McCormack’s tweet earned a fair amount of support, as well as criticism. Perhaps the best response came from Sen. Ted Cruz, who had this observation to Messing’s tweet.
Eric McCormack has yet to comment on the backlash to his tweet.
