Disney Putting Its Paws On A New Damn-Dirty ‘Apes’ Movie

Disney is revisiting one of the biggest properties from the newly-acquired Twentieth Century Fox, and has begun development of another Planet of the Apes movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new film will still be released under the Fox studio banner. It is not clear if the film will continue the recent Andy Serkis trilogy of films, or reboot the franchise.

2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes was a pretty definitive ending for the Serkis trilogy, so a continuation may not be set immediately after the film’s end.

Fox has selected Wes Ball to develop and direct the new Apes film. Ball is the filmmaker behind the Maze Runner film series.

The original Planet of the Apes film, released in 1968, starred Charlton Heston as astronaut Taylor and Roddy McDowell as the chimpanzee Cornelius. The film was based on a novel by French writer Pierre Boulle and spawned numerous sequels, a TV series, and was a pop culture phenomenon.
