Debra Messing Apologizes Over Racist Tweets

“Will and Grace” actress Debra Messing is in hot water for her recent tweets that are stirring controversy on both sides of the political aisle.

Many are calling her racist after she seemed to “whitesplain” to black conservatives her implication that they may be mentally ill.

Messing’s week had already started badly: she was criticized by Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg for her comments calling for a blacklist of anyone in the Hollywood industry who attended an upcoming fundraiser for President Donald Trump. She voiced her support for her “Will and Grace” co-star Eric McCormack, who originally floated the idea.

The comments did not sit well with Whoopi, who blasted the idea on her show “The View” on ABC. Despite being a vocal critic of President Trump, she did not appreciate the push to publicly shame and marginalize anyone based on their political leanings.

“Do not encourage people to print out lists, because the next list that comes out, your name will be on it, and people will be coming after you,” Goldberg said.

Messing then made things worse by attacking black conservatives who took her to task. After a black pastor called her out on her attempts to create a blacklist, Messing tried to claim she was a victim and said he was threatening her.

She then retweeted an image of a church sign calling black Trump supporters mentally ill. After much criticism online, she apologized for promoting the idea.

Regardless, her tweet set off comedian Terrence K. Williams, who tweeted that she “promoted a Message Calling Black Trump Supporters Mentally ill. She want(s) all Trump Supporters blacklisted & publicly shamed. @realDonaldTrump would be called a racist if he called blacks mentally ill.”

He then called for people to use the hashtag #RacistDebraMessing, which trended on Twitter for over a day.

In a series of angry tweets, Messing “whitesplained” her reasoning to Williams, insisting he was wrong about her intentions. “I apologized for liking that church sign. I said I regret it,” she tweeted to him. “I shud have thought before recklessly suppprting. You won’t accept this but black people are targeted by Trump’s GOP for voter supression. Charlottesville was about Trump supporters hating POC and Jews.”

Messing continued to rant over several more tweets to insist that she never called for a blacklist, even though she wanted a list of people who supported President Trump, so she could boycott them. “NUMBER 2 I NEVER NOR WOULD I EVER call for a blacklist of anyone for any reason. The info is publicly available. I as a consumer want to know where MY Money is going when I pay for entertainment. Just as you have the right to not watch W&G bc I don’t support Trump, I have the right to not go see (pay for) a movie with someone supporting babies in cages. It is First Amendment. Information, Knowledge.”

Her outburst only fueled the #RacistDebraMessing trend, as she was widely mocked for lecturing a black man on his political beliefs.

Since the hashtag trended, Messing has not addressed the controversy directly, instead constantly retweeting Democratic politicians and activists on issues ranging from gun control to climate change.
