Mark Ruffalo and Other Celebs Are Angry Ellen Said To ‘Be Kind’ To Republicans
Last week, talk show host Ellen Degeneres did something that made lots of celebrities angry – she hung out with a Republican.
After being caught on live TV seemingly enjoying a football game with former President George W. Bush, the very liberal Degeneres had some explaining to do. The “outrage mob” that dominates social media took Ellen to the proverbial woodshed for daring to appear in public with a conservative Republican.
Ellen, however, stood her ground. She defended her decision to appear with Bush. She used the opportunity to ask everyone to show more kindness and bipartisanship towards those that hold different opinions.
“I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have,” she said. “We’re all different and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s OK. When I say ‘be kind to one another,’ I don’t mean only the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone. Doesn’t matter.”
Some celebrities stood by Ellen’s call for kindness and bipartisanship, including singer Blake Shelton of “The Voice.” Others, however, rejected her call to be kind.
The Hollywood Backlash
Avengers star Mark Ruffalo, who spends most of his Twitter time retweeting left-wing political dogma, criticized Ellen’s call for kindness. He accused President Bush of war crimes, however, there is no evidence of that.
“Sorry, until George W. Bush is brought to justice for the crimes of the Iraq War, (including American-lead torture, Iraqi deaths & displacement, and the deep scars—emotional & otherwise—inflicted on our military that served his folly), we can’t even begin to talk about kindness,” the actor tweeted.
In addition, actress Susan Sarandon also responded angrily to Ellen, claiming Bush was a “war criminal.”
Even The Boston Globe jumped on the “war criminal” talking point.
Singer Gwen Stefani, however, bucked the trend and supported Ellen.
Other celebrities also supported Ellen’s comments, but they withdrew that support after being criticized on Twitter.
After calling Ellen a “queen” for taking a stand for civility, actress Kristen Bell deleted her Instagram post after receiving backlash. Likewise, Reese Witherspoon also voiced her support for Ellen, only to delete the tweet later after many hateful responses.
None of the celebrities or media outlets criticizing Ellen see the irony that they are, in fact, proving her point with every angry, outrageous response.
