‘Birds of Prey’ Director Cathy Yan Claims Studio Forced Her to Change the Film

Cathy Yan, the director of Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, is claiming in a cryptic tweet that she was forced to make major changes to her film by Warner Bros.

Birds of Prey was a solid hit for Warner upon its release in February. It grossed over $200 million worldwide on an $84 million budget, but it underperformed when compared to other DC Comics films. It was widely mocked by critics and fans alike for its over-the-top and disjointed approach.

While Yan has previously shown no remorse for her work on the film, she now seems to be blaming Warner Bros. for fiddling with the movie.

Her claim came after Suicide Squad director David Ayer tweeted that Warner forced him to reshoot some scenes because the film’s tone was “too dark.” He has claimed that “my soulful drama was beaten into a comedy.”

Here is the tweet from Ayer.

Yan Responds

In response to Ayer, Yan offered her sympathies, saying “I know the pain.” Her tweet insinuated she too had to make changes.

She didn’t elaborate as to what her film had to change or reshoot, but fans responding to her tweet claimed it referred to a “gay subplot” involving two male characters. Others claimed there was a plot device in which Ewan McGregor’s character of Black Mask hid pictures of his penis in a diamond.

Yan did, however, respond to YouTuber Grace Randolph. The movie reporter claimed the changes referred to new action scenes and the “dick pic” storyline.

Yan responded with “you have no idea what you’re talking about.” Randolph, however, stood by her story.

Yan then specifically denied the “dick pic” storyline, among other points.

Yan has offered no additional details.
