‘Coming to America’ Sequel to Skip Theaters, Will Premiere via Online Streaming Instead
The long-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 comedy classic Coming to America is the latest studio release to bypass theaters and go for a streaming premiere instead.
Variety is reporting that Paramount Pictures is set to sell Coming 2 America to Amazon Studios, in a deal worth roughly $125 million. According to the report, which cites insiders to the deal, the film will have its streaming premiere on December 18.
The deal is nearly done, with some details to still work out, including getting Murphy’s blessing.
Amazon Studios, in an attempt to compete with Netflix, has been buying up a number of films, including the Borat sequel, the Tom Clancy movie adaptation Without Remorse starring Michael B. Jordan, and Regina King’s One Night in Miami.
Variety has more on the sequel.
In the sequel, Prince Akeem is set to become king of the fictional country of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America — a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle. To honor the former king’s dying wish to groom his grandson as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America. Murphy, Hall and Jones are reprising their roles. The film stars Jermaine Fowler and supporting cast includes Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, Arsenio Hall and Wesley Snipes.
