Netflix’s Colin Kaepernick Series Has Become a COVID-19 Super-Spreader Event

An outbreak of COVID-19 cases has cast a dark cloud over the production of Netflix’s series “Colin in Black & White.”

According to a report in Variety, nine crew members on the series’ pre-production crew have tested positive or the coronavirus. Netflix hasn’t commented on the situation, but The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported the cluster of cases at a Netflix production office located at 18421 S. Main St. in Gardena, California, the same address used by the series’ production.

Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay is executive producer on “Colin in Black & White,” a scripted series which focuses on Colin Kaepernick’s high school years, his NFL career, and his activism, including his kneeling during the National Anthem. Filming was scheduled to begin in January, and has not yet been delayed because of the outbreak.

This isn’t the first coronavirus outbreak tied to a Netflix production. Earlier this month, four COVID-19 cases were reported on the set of “Family Reunion,” a comedy the streaming service is producing. Production was not halted.

As California continues to mandate “stay at home” orders for private citizens and closes businesses and restaurants, the state allows Hollywood productions to continue. These exceptions for the entertainment industry are even more glaring as reports of COVID-19 outbreaks on production sets continue to mount. Among reported outbreaks recently were 20 positive cases on the set of “Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet,” 11 cases on the set of “Why Women Kill” and seven cases on the set of “Call Your Mother,” all within the past month and all at CBS in Studio City.

Last month, a coronavirus outbreak was reported on the set of the “Kelly Clarkson Show” at NBC Universal.

Neither Ava DuVernay nor Colin Kaepernick have commented on the COVID-19 outbreak on their set.
