J.J. Abrams Plans to Ruin Superman Next With Movie Reboot by a Controversial Writer

Fresh off the disastrous end to the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have set their sites on a new target: Superman.

According to a report by Deadline, Abrams and Bad Robot are producing a cinematic reboot of Superman for Warner Bros. and DC. It is not clear if a new actor will play the Man of Steel or if Henry Cavill will return. Cavill has said he would like to reprise the role, but given the use of the term “reboot,” that seems to indicate a fresh slate (and cast) for the upcoming film.

Abrams has hired author Ta-Nehisi Coates to write the screenplay. Coates is an odd choice, as his background is as a political writer. He has written for Marvel Comics, although his stories for Captain America and Black Panther were met with mixed results. He only recently wrote a screenplay for a film that is in development with director Ryan Coogler.

Coates is well known, however, for making controversial statements about 9/11 first responders. He once wrote of the first responders caught up in the 2001 terror attacks that “They were not human to me. Black, white, or whatever, they were menaces of nature.” His opinion was based on police brutality against African-Americans, but he was still widely condemned.

Neither Abrams nor Warner Bros. have commented on the story.
