Joanna Cameron, TV’s ‘Isis,’ Has Passed Away (VIDEO)

Model and actress Joanna Cameron, star of the 1970s live-action superhero series “The Secrets of Isis,” has passed away at the age of 70.

Cameron died October 22 in Hawaii, where she lived. Her passing was confirmed by her “Isis” costar Joanna Pang Atkins, who tweeted “sad to post that Joanna Cameron “The Mighty Isis” has flown to heaven. She suffered a stroke and passed away from complications this past Friday. May she RIP.”

Isis was the alter-ego of teacher Andrea Thomas, who discovered an ancient amulet that gave her the power of the Egyptian goddess Isis.

Cameron portrayed the character during the series’ two seasons, from 1975 to 1976. Isis was a original character developed by television production company Filmation and producers Norm Prescott and Lou Scheimer, to provide a female superhero counterpart to its “Shazam” series. Together, the “Shazam/Isis Power Hour” aired on CBS on Saturday mornings, where Cameron’s Isis often crossed over to appear on episodes of “Shazam.”

DC Comics, who owned the Shazam character, would later create a short-lived Isis comic to accompany the show and officially add the character to the DC Comic Universe.

Prior to “Isis,” Cameron starred in a handful of film and television roles, but was mostly known at the time for her commercial work. For several years, Cameron actually held the Guinness World Record for the number of national TV commercials an actor had appeared in. Another actor holds the record now. After “Isis,” she only appeared in five other projects, including the “Amazing Spider-Man” live-action series in 1978. By 1980, she had retired from acting.

This YouTube video includes the first two episodes of the series.

Our condolences to her family, friends, and fans.
