‘Arrested Development’ Actress Upset People Care More About ‘Old White Guy’ Brad Pitt Than Her Career

On today’s episode of “Celebrities Who Think Too Highly of Themselves,” we feature Alia Shawkat, who is super annoyed that people would rather talk about her relationship with “older white guy” Brad Pitt than her career.

Shawkat is best known for her roles as Maeby in “Arrested Development” and as Dory in “Search Party,” two critically acclaimed television series. She’s also appeared in a number of films (usually in supporting roles) in a career that she began as a child actress in 1999. That includes the recent film Being the Ricardos, and in all fairness, it’s an impressive resume with quality roles for a 32-year-old.

In a recent interview with The New Yorker, however, Shawkat complained that her career didn’t get the proper respect when the tabloid media linked her romantically to actor Brad Pitt.

In 2020, she was photographed hanging out with Brad Pitt, and the paparazzi went crazy. She denies there was any relationship (she labels herself a “queer Iraqi”), but she seems really upset that the tabloid media coverage was focused less on her career, and more on Pitt, one of the world’s most famous actors.

“It was not fun at all,” Shawkat said of the coverage. “I’m not an actor who has ever dealt with the paparazzi. They don’t know who the fuck I am.”

Her criticism, she claims, is not directed at Pitt (who she calls a “great fucking guy”), although she dismisses him an “older white guy” in criticizing the coverage of their “relationship.” Instead, she feels the focus of the coverage should have been on her and her career, not the “older white guy” who has been nominated personally for seven Oscars, and won two.

“Of course, the idea of me being romantically involved with an older white guy is what gets me the most attention. Not a twenty-year career,” Shawkat told The New Yorker. “That’s what gets me. And it’s ironic and gross and stupid.”

While we sympathize for anyone who has to deal with the paparazzi and tabloid media, something tells us Pitt might have dodged a bullet with her.
