John Williams Returning to ‘Star Wars’ for the ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Series
Oscar-winning composer John Williams is providing music for the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series for Disney+.
Variety broke the story exclusively on Thursday afternoon.
According to the report, Williams won’t be scoring the entire series, but provided what it called the “musical signature” for the series. That likely means a new theme song and/or a possible reworking of the “Obi-Wan Theme’ he wrote for previous Star Wars films featuring Kenobi, played by Alec Guinness in the Original Trilogy and Ewan McGregor in the Prequel Trilogy.
Williams recorded the music last week with a Los Angeles orchestra under tight security. “Obi-Wan Kenobi” will air on the Disney+ streaming service beginning on May 25.
More from Variety.
Williamsโ โStar Warsโ scores are legendary. He won an Oscar for the original in 1977 and received nominations for five of the sequels (โThe Empire Strikes Backโ and โReturn of the Jediโ in 1980 and 1983, followed by โThe Force Awakens,โ โThe Last Jediโ and โThe Rise of Skywalkerโ in 2015, 2017 and 2019).
He also wrote the theme for โSolo: A Star Wars Storyโ in 2018 and Disneylandโs โStar Wars: Galaxyโs Edgeโ theme park in 2019. The latter won him his most recent Grammy, one of six awarded for his โStar Warsโ compositions over the years.
Williams, who turned 90 on Feb. 8, is remarkably busy. He is composing the scores for Steven Spielbergโs โThe Fabermansโ (due out in November) and for the fifth โIndiana Jonesโ movie (due next year). He will conduct the Vienna Philharmonic on March 12-13, the Philadelphia Orchestra April 19 and 21, the Pittsburgh Symphony on April 25 and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Sept. 2-4 at the Hollywood Bowl.
No word yet as to who will be scoring the six individual episodes, which are believed to be recording in London.
Here’s Williams’ original “Obi Wan” theme, also known as the “Force” theme, written for the 1977 film.
Lucasfilm has not confirmed Williams’ involvement with the series.
