Will Daniel Radcliffe Return to ‘Harry Potter?’ The Actor Has Finally Answered!
Daniel Radcliffe has finally answered the question: “Will he ever return to play Harry Potter?”
Rumors abound that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the stage play that continues Harry’s story, might get a movie. After Radcliffe reunited with Emma Watson and Rupert Grint recently for the HBO Max’s “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts” special, there was speculation the trio might be open to a return to the J.K. Rowling franchise.
In an interview with The New York Times, however, Daniel Radcliffe confirmed that making a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie is “not something I’m really interested in doing right now.” The play is written by Jack Thorne from a story co-written by J.K. Rowling. It is set 19 years after the final Harry Potter book and follows an adult Harry (who works at the Ministry of Magic), and his son, Albus Severus Potter (now attending Hogwarts).
That’s likely going to disappoint millions of fans hoping for more Harry Potter adventures. For them, the Fantastic Beasts movies currently hitting theater screens aren’t enough of a fix. Radcliffe acknowledges this, and while he will leave the door open in the future, it’s closed for now. “This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want,” he said. “But I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore. I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of Potter okay and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life.”
Never Say Never
Fans, at least, can take some solace in that Radcliffe didn’t close the door completely. “I’m never going to say never,” he said, “but the Star Wars guys had like 30, 40 years before they went back. For me, it’s only been 10. It’s not something I’m really interested in doing right now.”
Chris Columbus, who directed the Harry Potter films The Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets, got everyone’s hopes up that about a possible reunion when he told Variety that he would be eager to direct Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in a Cursed Child movie. “It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine,” Columbus said.
The Harry Potter films have grossed nearly $2.4 billion worldwide. The two Fantastic Beasts films, a prequel series to the Harry Potter films, have grossed nearly $400 million as well. that makes the combined franchise, called J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, the fifth most successful film franchise of all time.
This featurette was released in conjunction with the 20th anniversary reunion last year.
