Watch the New Trailer for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

It’s been a long time coming, but Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the iconic Tom Cruise film, is finally coming to theaters this May, and a new trailer is here to check out (featured below)!

Top Gun: Maverick takes place 30 years after the original 1986 film. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) has passed up promotions to remain in the air. He’s now a test pilot, but is called back into service to train a newly-graduated class of pilots from the Navy’s Top Gun school, for an important mission that has never before been attempted by any living pilot.

Among the pilots he has to train is Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), Maverick’s wingman who died in the original film.

Top Gun: Maverick also stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. Val Kilmer, who played Maverick’s rival “Iceman” in the original Top Gun, will also appear, as the trailer teases. However, due to his health issues, it is unclear how extensive his role will be. Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) directs the film. Kosinski also directed another Tom Cruise film, Oblivion.

Here’s the trailer.

The film has had a difficult road to release since production began in 2018. It was originally scheduled to release on July 12, 2019, but during shooting, the release date was moved to summer of 2020. The pandemic caused four different delays in the release date: first to December 23, 2020, then to July 2, 2021, to November 19, 2021, and then finally to May 27, 2022.

The movie stirred controversy when the studio changed Maverick’s signature jacket to appease censors in China, who could have kept the film out of theaters.

This featurette shows the film’s commitment to realism in shooting the jet scenes.

Top Gun grossed over $350 million worldwide upon its release in 1986. Top Gun: Maverick finally opens in theaters on May 27, 2022.
