Marvel’s ‘The New Mutants’ Gets Yet Another Release Date (VIDEO)
Marvel’s The New Mutants isn’t coming to Disney+ or Hulu. It is still coming to theaters. No, really, we’re serious.
The often-delayed comic book film is getting its fifth – that’s right, FIFTH – theatrical release date. And it might actually happen this time.
Set in the same Marvel Comics universe as the X-Men (although it doesn’t co-exist with the X-films), the movie follows five young mutants who must escape the secret facility that holds them captive, just as they are discovering their developing powers.
Disney has announced that the film will not be released on August 28, nearly two and a half years removed from its original release date. It is currently the only film scheduled for wide release on the weekend before the busy Labor Day holiday.
The New Mutants was previously scheduled to release on April 3 until the coronavirus pandemic shut down theaters nationwide. The film, shot before Fox was bought by Disney, was originally scheduled to open in theaters on April 13, 2018. After production delays, and Fox’s sale to Disney, the film was pushed to February 22, 2019 and then to August 2, 2019.
The many delays, especially the April setback, led many to believe the film would skip theaters. The emergence of Disney+ and the studio’s acquisition of Hulu made those services the rumored destination for the movie. Disney, however, remains committed to a theatrical release.
The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone and stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Alice Braga.
Here’s a trailer for the film, released earlier this year.
