Mego to Release New ‘Planet of the Apes’ Figures
Mego is once again heading back to its 70s roots, announcing that it will produce figures from the classic film series Planet of the Apes.
Update: Pictures of the first figures can be seen by clicking here.
Mego’s Apes line in the 1970s have become iconic collectibles, and still have a strong fan following. After Mego began making their figures again in the summer of 2018, collectors have been asking for figures from the Planet of the Apes series. With Disney now owning 20th Century Fox, it seemed unclear whether it would ever happen.
In a video message posted on Facebook Saturday night, Mego founder Marty Abrams announced the company had acquired the licensing rights, and it appears that includes both the original Apes films and the TV series, but that is not yet confirmed.
Details were scarce, but Abrams did say they will make figures in the classic 8 inch scale, as well as the larger 14 inch scale, a first for the line. Mego President Joel Rosenzweig promised the line will include a deep character selection.
“Dr. Mego” Paul Clarke confirmed on Facebook that the first figures should hit stores around April of 2021, and will be reissues of the classic 70s figures. There wasn’t time to have new sculpts in stores so soon, but promises they will come in future waves.
