Alyssa Milano Calls for a Sex Strike, and Twitter Gave Her the Business

Alyssa Milano is under fire from both sides of the political aisle after she demanded that women withhold sex from men to protest a pro-life law in Georgia.

The state just adopted a new law that states an unborn child cannot be aborted once a heartbeat is detected, which could happen as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. Detractors say many women are not even aware they are pregnant at six weeks, and say the law is a backdoor ban on all abortions.

Milano initially called for a boycott of Georgia over the law, as the state is home to a billion-dollar Hollywood production industry with shows like “The Walking Dead” and movies including Avengers: Infinity War having filmed there. That boycott fizzled, however, after it was revealed that Milano herself is still filming her Netflix show “Insatiable” there.

Without a clear-cut direction to focus her anger, the 46-year-old Milano insisted women conduct a sex strike, and withhold the nasty from men, in protest of the law.

“Our reproductive rights are being erased,” she tweeted. “Until women have legal control over our own bodies we just cannot risk pregnancy. JOIN ME by not having sex until we get bodily autonomy back. I’m calling for a #SexStrike. Pass it on.”

On Twitter, the idea was widely mocked by the conservative right and condemned by the liberal left, a rare show of unity. Perhaps the angriest responses came from feminists, who took issue with the idea that women needed to use sex to get what they wanted.

They also came up with more reasons why Milano’s idea was stupid, proving that they were overthinking a subject Milano herself didn’t think all the way through.

The Daily Caller documented responses from angry feminists.

“The idea of a #SexStrike – where sex is something men seek and women withhold – is the same regressive model of sexuality that Republican men use to legislate! No thanks,” wrote feminist writer Jessica Valenti.

Valenti claimed that “a big part of the reason GOP men want to ban abortion is because they hate the idea of women having non-married, non-procreative sex!” She suggested women have more sex, rather than no sex, to protest abortion.

“Alyssa Milano is back being ridiculous again I see,” commented feminist writer Imani Gandy. “What is a sex strike going to do besides reinforce patriarchal notions that women have sex only to please men?”

“Someone needs to sit homegirl down and tell her she’s not helping. Her calls to boycott Georgia are equally asinine,” added Gandy.

Over on the right, conservatives couldn’t stop laughing at the unintended irony.

The memes, highlighting many of Milano’s less-attractive supporters, nearly made themselves.

In response to angry women who weren’t ready to stop partying, Milano posted an indignant tweet, claiming those who live in Georgia might go to jail if they miscarry a child (spoiler: they won’t).

Despite the wave of mockery and criticism, Milano still insists a sex strike is a great idea. She’s also reminding people to listen to her podcast.
