The Dread Pirate Roberts has a Perfect Response to the ‘Princess Bride’ Remake
In case you haven’t heard, there are rumors of a possible remake in the works of The Princess Bride, the 1987 classic film. And folks find the idea inconceivable.
The controversy began when Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra told Variety “Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo The Princess Bride. Some people want to do animated versions of some of the sitcoms. Not a month goes by when we don’t have an idea coming from some very big name wanting to do things.”
The response was less than enthusiastic. Fans insisted The Princess Bride is one of those rare films that should never be remade. You can count Westley himself among those fans.
Actor Cary Elwes, who played Westley, aka The Dread Pirate Roberts, took to Twitter to express his views. He borrowed one of his lines from the movie to make his point.
“There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one,” he said.
Sony has since backtracked a bit, saying the statement was not an indication of any plans for a remake. Rather, it was meant to reflect interest in the film after all these years.
