Disney+ Has Original 6 ‘Star Wars’ Films in 4K, with 20th Century Fox Fanfare Restored (VIDEO)

With the Disney+ streaming service now up and running, subscribers are finding a surprising feature when watching the original George Lucas Star Wars films.

The first six “Episode” films, from 1977’s Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope to 2005’s Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, are available in 4K Ultra High Definition, the first time the films have been available in that resolution.

Previously, the first six films had only been available in high definition on Blu-ray and Digital, with pixel resolution of 1920 (vertical) x 1080 (horizontal). That was a significant upgrade from DVD, which only offered 480 pixels of horizontal resolution.

4K offers pixel resolution of 4096 (vertical) x 2160 (horizontal), which better captures the detail of movies shot on film. It’s why older films released in 4K look almost new.

The movies are also offered in HDR 10 (high dynamic resolution), which offers better color depth and a better natural presentation. They also feature Dolby Vision, which provides the best rendering of the video on a scene by scene basis.

The six films also feature Dolby Atmos soundtracks, the best audio mix used in theaters, and previously not offered for home viewing.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are also available in 4K for the first time. Solo: A Star Wars Story had previously been released in 4K.

Disney also restored the 20th Century Fox opening with fanfare to the movies, which had been removed from all of the original six films except A New Hope, after Disney bought Lucasfilm. Fox still owned the original Star Wars (but not the sequels and prequels) until Disney officially bought the studio earlier this year.
